Madrid's zoo, considered one of the best in Europe, was built in 1972 and displays around 3,000 animals behind moats rather than bars. The zoo also has more than 100 varieties of bird, an aquarium, a train and performing dolphins, which are in action twice a day. Popular choices for children include an animal petting area where various creatures can be fed, parrot shows, birds of prey and a shark tank.
